Google Chrome
An Android Case Study
"Still haven't found what I'm looking for..."
December, 2022 - Chris Blachford
The "Find in Page" feature has been a staple in web browsers since the early days of the internet, allowing users to quickly locate specific keywords within a webpage. In Google Chrome, this feature has evolved to include options such as highlighting all instances of a search term and match-case sensitivity. With a growing number of users relying on their mobile devices for daily web browsing, the "Find in Page" feature has become increasingly important in ensuring a seamless and efficient user experience. As a result, it remains a widely used tool by Android Chrome users today.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
In this case study, I am proposing an interface update to make the discoverability of "Find in Page" on the Android version of Google Chrome clearer, a feature that aids in decreasing User frustration during the everyday navigation process.
For this project, I had 2 weeks to compile, analyze, and apply my research towards developing an update for a popular stock Android application.

DISCOVER

Out of 11 users surveyed, 81.8% responded by saying that Google Chrome is an everyday fixture of their mobile usage.
Why are people using
"Find in Page" ?
"It has really saved me
lots of time when I need to
find something quickly.
"...to find the information
I need quickly."
"To locate information quickly."
"It's useful when
attempting to find
relevant information quickly."

DEFINE
PAIN POINTS
"Helpful on a computer.
Use Daily. Didn't know
it was on Android."
"I scroll until I find what
I'm looking for."
"If I hadn't explicitly clicked the featured, I wouldn't have noticed I was using it."
SOLUTION
Discoverabillity
Make what they're
looking for easier and
quicker to find.
Create a clear and concise visual change when using the feature

How might we help users find information that is not easily accessible through a websites built in search and filter options?
How might we increase the discoverability and
effectiveness of the Find in Page feature?

User Journey

User arrives on
the landing page.

User enters their
desired topic into the search bar.

User arrives at the view results page.

After some time spent not locating the desired content, User searches for "Find in Page"

After some time, User discovers Find in Page and is able to more accurately pinpoint the information they were looking for.
THE PROBLEM
Ryan, an Android user of the Google Chrome app, is having difficulty finding specific information within the web pages he visits and, as a result, is spending more time than necessary searching for the information he needs, leading to frustration and decreased productivity.

SKETCHES + ITERATIONS
"Sub Search"

User arrives on
the landing page.

User enters their desired search.

User arrives on results page.

User discovers "Find in Page" via accessing the search bar.
PROPOSED SOLUTION

Additional location for "Find in Page"

Heightened focus on
"Find in Page" when in use
User Feedback

After my iteration on my initial proposal, I followed up with 3 users to gain additional feedback.

Here are some takeaways:
"...saved me lots of time. It's really simple to use."
"Makes searching more efficient. Allows me to skim and scan quickly..."
"Improved my experience as I was able to find the information I needed quickly.
NEXT STEPS
To follow up, I want to further assess the effectiveness of the "Find in Page" feature with tests designed to determine if users are able to successfully locate what they are looking for and to measure the amount of time it takes to do so.
These tests will be centered around two key outcomes:

-
Can something be found in a page using the "Find in Page" feature (Yes/No)?
-
How long does it take for users to find what they are looking for?

The results of these tests will provide valuable insight into the user experience of the "Find in Page" feature and inform any potential improvements or modifications for future iterations of my proposed solution.
